But the day belong to skipper Steve Smith as he placed the highest score ever in a limited-over’s international at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia, after losing 92-4 in the 21st over, added 101 in the last eight overs to reach 324-8.

Smith scored 164 from 157 balls, including four sixes and 14 boundaries, before he was out late after skying a catch from Trent Boult to Colin Munro at mid-wicket.  Travis Head 52 and Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade 38 also played good innings down the order.Smith got a not out decision on an lbw appeal from Boult early on in the innings, which the New Zealanders will regret not reviewing.

But leg-spinner Adam Zampa enticed Guptill into a bogus shot to find fielding substitute Glenn Maxwell at mid-wicket and was on his way for 114 off 102 balls in the 33rd over. He was the major hope to take his team to win but can’t play through the innings.

Colin Munro showed some fight but he was out on 49 runs and The Kiwis were dismissed for 256 in 44.2 over. Hazlewood picked 3 wickets, Marsh, Zampa and Cummins ended up picking 2 wickets apiece.
