Date & Venue: 16th-20th December, 2016, M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Day 4: The fourth day of the 5th Test belongs to Karun Nair. Starting the day unbeaten on 71 with Murali Vijay on other end at 17*. Karun Nair started the day vigilantly in the first hour, he gained in assurance as he scored his maiden Test ton. With Murali Vijay playing stop game and Nair playing showing aggressive play and both added 63 runs for the 5th wicket before Vijay was adjudged LBW on the ball of Liam Dawson. Ashwin was the next batsmen to join the Karun Nair on the crease.

The post-lunch session is belonged to India as both Karun Nair and Ashwin raised their confidence and played on their strength and again Karun Nair playing dominant role from strength to strength. The duo added 181 runs for the 6th wicket before visitor’s picked wicket of Ashwin on 67 runs. Next batsmen Ravinder Jadeja to join the karun Nair who already playing on double hundred and both of them added 138 runs for the 7th wicket at more than 7 runs per over before Jadeja got out on 51 runs just before the triple ton. Umesh Yadav entered the crease to support Karun Nair to complete him Maiden triple ton and India declared the innings on 759/7

And the moment came when Karun Nair completed his 1st ever triple ton and becoming 3rd batsmen to convert maiden ton into triple ton before him Sir Garry Sobers and Bob Simpson did this. Before this only Virender Sehwag did this by hitting two triple tons 319 and 309 against South Africa and Pakistan.  Coincidently Sehwag best Score of 319 also came at same venue on March 2008. The best thing about Karun Nair Innings is that he paced his innings very well and played each and every shot in his innings weather it is sweep or reverse sweep:

Karun Nair 300

Split of Triple Ton Strike Rate

1st-100

55+

2nd-100

80+

3rd-100

130+

This is India’s highest score in the tests as previous best was 726/9d against Sri Lanka way back in 2009 at Mumbai. Now it will be good to see how Indian bowlers bowl and use the pitch as India has good lead in their hand.
