On This Day, 2003: West Indies Chased Highest Ever Total in History of Test Cricket

The highest successful fourth-innings run chase in Test history remains the 418 scored by West Indies still stands as the best successful chase to beat Australia in 2003.

Australia looked quite comfortable sailing to a fourth victory out of four as Australia had beaten West Indies in the first three Tests of a four-Test series in the West Indies and were on top after scoring 240 and 417 in their two innings, whereas the men from the Caribbean had made 240 during their first spell at the crease.

But the West Indies completed an extraordinary turnaround to reach the unlikely target after slipping to 74 for 3 and losing Brian Lara for 60 with the score 165. But Ramnaresh Sarwan, with an aggressive 105, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with 104, fought back bravely. Avoiding the disgrace of a first series whitewash on home soil.

In last era, at Perth, Proteas chased down the second highest 4th innings target thanks to centuries from captain Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers. 

 Third on the list is India way back in 1976, chased down target of 403 against West Indies in Port of Spain. Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath

 Scored centuries. Mohinder Amarnath also made crucial 85 runs. India made 406/4 in the fourth innings and winning the match by 6 wickets.
