On This Day, 2013: India Won The ICC Champions Trophy

This day on 23rd June, 2013 India defeated England by 5 runs and won the Champions Trophy. Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first Indian skipper who has won three ICC trophies. Significantly, in the captaincy of Dhoni, Team India had won the T20 World Cup – 2007, ODI World Cup – 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013. 

This was the 7th ICC Champions Trophy and second for India, however in 2002, they had to share the trophy with Sri Lanka that year since this was a joint championship winning.

India also became the second team after Australia to win the ICC Champions Trophy more than one once.

Shikhar Dhawan returned to the team after two years and was named the man of the series for scoring 363 runs in the tournament.

Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 33 runs of 25 balls and two wickets, was selected as the man of the match.  

Team India did not lose a single match in the Champions Trophy in England. Whether it was a warm up or a group match

 After the victory every Indian player was seen dancing. All Indian players, including Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma, were occupied in the celebration.

Late start due to the rain, forced the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 final match to be curtailed 20-20 overs and after winning the toss England invited India to bat first. India made 129 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs. Virat Kohli (43), Shikhar Dhawan (31) and Ravindra Jadeja (33) were the best scorers for them. Ravi Bopara took 3 wickets for England.

In reply, the English team could make 124 runs at the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs in front of Indian pace and spin batteries. Ian Morgan (33), Ravi Bopara, Jonathan Trott (20) and Ian Bell (13) could only touch the tenth position. Ravindra Jadeja, R. Ashwin and Ishant Sharma made two or two wickets in their name.
