India all-rounder Ravinder Jadeja has been suspended from playing one Test Match for breach of ICC code of conduct. The statement came from ICC after the 2nd Test Match at Colombo (SSC) which India won by innings and 53 runs.

“India’s Ravindra Jadeja has been suspended for the upcoming Pallekele Test after his accumulated demerit points reached six within a 24-month period following his latest breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for which he received a 50 per cent fine and three demerit points. After fielding off his own bowling, Jadeja threw the ball back at batsman “Malinda Pushpakumara” barely missing the Sri Lankan. Even though batsman, not moved from the crease take a run.who had made no move to take a run, had to dodge quickly and it left wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha shaky and he made an valiant attempt to stop the ball.

The article charge in question relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match”.

Jadeja also received a fine of 50 per cent of his match fee, and three demerit points for this. Those three points, plus the three more points he received for running on the pitch four times during last October’s Indore Test against New Zealand, earned him a ban for the Colombo Test thought the ICC’s Code of Conduct.

Details of Jadeja’s first offense are as follows:

  • Match – third Test vs New Zealand, Indore, 8-11 October 2016
  • Charge – Level 2, Article 2.2.11, which relates to “causing avoidable damage to the pitch during an international match”.

Under the ICC’s demerit point system, reaching four points converts to two suspension points, which means the player misses a Test. The six demerit points Jadeja now has will remain on his record, and just two more points will see him banned again.

The three demerit points Jadeja picked up in October 2016 will be erased in October 2018, while the points he got for yesterday’s offence will be mopped from his books 24 months from yesterday. If Ravinder Jadeja picks two more demerit points before October 2018, means his total moves up to eight demerit points and this will mean that he will face the penalty of a two-Test/four-ODI/four-T20I suspension.
