He played his debut and last Test match in Colombo itself. He is the first player in the history of Sri Lankan cricket to score over 10,000 Test runs. Despite of his pretty low ODI average, Jayawardene is considered to be one of the greatest batsmen produced by Sri Lanka. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have highest partnership record tests for any wicket on their name. Both of them scored 624 runs for the third wicket against South Africa at Colombo on 27 Jul 2006. Moreover along with Sangakkara he added 6554 runs as a pair in Test Cricket (2000-2014).
Jayawardene has hundreds against every Test side, and in every Test-playing country apart from South Africa, where he has struggled most. He has also outclassed as a slip fielder all through his career, sitting third on the all-time catches list, with 205 seized. Statistics also reveal that c Jayawardene b Muralitharan is the most common bowler-fielder combination in the history of Test cricket.
Jayawardene also worked as an international TV commentator in the first test at Headingly on 19 May 2016 between England and Sri Lanka.
